Truth be told, I quite enjoy the break from football between mid-May and August. It's summer time, we get decent weather, every weekend is free to make plans. This summer on the other hand, has been a wash out, the wettest on record I believe. On top of that, I live by the seaside and the winds have been high so even when it is dry enough to get out and about, the gusts don't make it enjoyable.
Luckily, last weekend the football started back! At least during the poor spell of weather I can put the football on the telly, I don't particularly enjoy much on the box apart from the sport. Even the Formula One is on a summer break. This weekend is the first home game of the season and there's a sense of optimism at the club since the changes in the summer. New manager, some decent signings and an unexpected point away at Leeds in the first game of the season. For those of you who haven't worked it out, I support Cardiff City.
QPR are the visitors to the Cardiff City stadium Saturday, they got a trouncing on the opening weekend, knowing Cardiff like I do, we won't have a hope against a team low on confidence and the opening day buzz around the ground will diminish pretty rapidly. My prediction for Saturday is a 1-1 draw, I can see it being quite tight between two teams who only just avoided relegation last season. A lot of my mates have a renewed sense of hope, particularly with the return of local hero Aaron Ramsey. I'm really happy with the signings of Josh Bowler and Karlan Grant. Jamilu Collins and Ebou Adams are both welcome returns, after both signing last summer, they return from being injured for the entirety of last campaign.
I know better from over 20 years of following Cardiff that, whenever things appear rosy, disaster is usually not far away. However, even I think we will do better than last season and predict we'll finish 14th this season. Cardiff bring out the worst in me, I'm usually an optimistic person in life and always try to see the positive, but Cardiff really do bring out my pessimistic side!
I like the odd flutter on the weekends football matches and always put a bet on the winners of each of the English leagues. This season I've gone for Manchester City, Coventry City, Barnsley and Stockport County. Coventry are probably my outside pick of all of those but the Football League picks all pay out on the top 4 places. Coventry got to the play-off final last year and even after selling their star striker, Gyokeres, for really good money, they seem to have re-invested it all back into the playing staff.
Let me know what you think of my picks in the comments and what your picks are? Make sure you add in who you support so I can pick out any biased choices haha!
I hope you enjoyed, please feel free to get in touch!
All the best,
Andrew
