For me personally, Saturday marks the worst day of the year. I wake up with my gut churning, the thought of the outcome gives me anxiety, my mind can’t concentrate on conversations I’m having without subconsciously wondering what is going to happen and all this is before a ball is kicked. I imagine the palpitations during the match! If you haven’t guessed, it’s derby day.
I actually live in the city of our closest rivals, my partner and all of her family support the “enemy” along with most of my work colleagues and some friends so I always try not to get too wrapped up in the hype.
If you don’t know my team, I talked about them a little in a previous blog *insert link*. If you fancy a guess I’ll drop some clues along the way. We don’t have a good record against our rivals, in fact we have lost the last 4 in a row with an aggregate score of 12-2, failing to score in 3 of those. I have little hope of coming away with anything other than my tail between my legs and damaged pride.
Sometimes having low expectations can be a good thing, you tend to find more positives in a bad situation. At the end of the day, I love football because of its unpredictability, no two matches are ever the same. Sure some are more entertaining than others, but as in life, you need to go through the bad games to really appreciate the good.
I think our rivalry can be more fierce than most, our cities are 40 or so miles apart and I believe this contributes towards the ferocity. People don’t have connection between the teams. Liverpool and Everton, City and United, all of the London teams and Celtic-Rangers all live in the same city. I think that’s why my outlook has changed slightly towards the derby, I desperately want to win but I’d still rather finish above them and lose twice, a lot think otherwise.
Anyway, my prediction for the game is, unfortunately, a 1-2 loss. My prediction for the first home game was wrong so hopefully I’m wrong again haha!
Did you guess which team I support?
Who do you support and who are your biggest rivals?
Are you going to a game this weekend?
Let me know in the comments, I’d love to hear from you.
Time to find out if the worst day of the year can turn into one of the best days of the year, fingers crossed!
